Please join us in welcoming Dr. micha cárdenas to her new role as Associate Chair of Performance, Play & Design. In this capacity, micha will serve the Department as the primary liaison between APGM faculty and students and the Department. The Department is excited about working closely with micha to continue to enrich the UCSC experience for all of us!
micha is Associate Professor of PPD and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies. A first generation Colombian American, she is the Director of the Critical Realities Studio,a hybrid studio/lab that uses multiple realities, in art, to address critical global issues including climate change, racism, and gendered violence. Her books include Poetic Operations (Duke 2022), The Transreal: Political Aesthetics of Crossing Realities (Atropos 2012) and Trans Desire/Affective Cyborgs (Atropos 2010). She is also the co-editor of the Queer/Trans/Digital series at NYU Press with Amanda Philips and Bo Ruberg. Her artwork has been described as "a seminal milestone for artistic engagement in VR" (Spike art journal, Berlin) and she was named "one of the seven bio-artists who are transforming the fabric of life itself" by io9. She has presented her scholarship and artworks literally all over the world.
